here some of the most frequently asked questions we receive.
- When do your trips leave? Where do you go?
- We're a comfortable, fast, beachable charter
boat, not a big tour operator. This means that you pick the
times and the places we go! We'll help you decide, and
Captain Gerry is your expert guide but it's your
trip!
- Can you tell me about your sightseeing trips? What are my
options?
- The best way to learn about them is right here:
This website also has info about your friendly,
knowledgeable captain, and maps, a natural history
guidebook, and more! If you have further questions, we'd be happy to
answer them by e-mail at sea@alaska.net; or call toll free at
(888) 471-2312 (local number is (907) 472-2312).
- Is such-and-such a date and time open? For example, in mid-summer we're often asked,
"We just arrived in Alaska. Do you have any availability in the next few days/today?"
- Possibly. The later the time slot, the better your chances. During peak season,
chances are slim we'll be able to fit a longer trip into a specific time slot at the last minute.
We're very busy June through mid-August, but there are sometimes last-minute openings
available. We are particularly amenable to fitting in last-minute sightseeing trips.
In particular, we might be able to double you up with a previously-booked
trip, and you might save money as a result.
The only way to find out is to e-mail us or sea@alaska.net or
call toll free at (888) 471-2312 (if you're in Whittier, use our local number:
(907) 472-2312).
- Can you recommend a trip?
- It depends on what you want to see and how long a trip you want. If
you want a longer trip seeing spectacular glaciers and rugged mountains,
have a look at the College Fjord Plus!
trip--eight hours. For five-hour tours that are somewhat similar, see
the Esther Passage/Barry Arm trip or the Blackstone Bay Plus Wildlife trip. If you've
just got to see whales during late summer, it'll take a long time to get
to the prime whale viewing waters. That's why our
whale watching trips are 10-11 hours--and worth it. In summer 2002
we had many amazing successes, with multiple breachings and whales
seeming to play around the boat! We have other options as well (see the
links under "Can you tell me about your sightseeing trips?" above), but
these have been our most popular.
- How much do your sightseeing tours cost?
- See the links above for all tour pricing information. Prices range
from $99 to $225 per person, with a 4 person minimum, except for the
full-day whalewatching trip (a 3-person minimum). We also offer custom trips
at $125/hour, or at daily rates of $800 and up.
- How likely are we to see whales on a whalewatching trip?
- We've encountered humpback whales on over 90% of our whale trips since 1999.
Our sighting rate for orcas on the same trips has ranged from about 33% - 50%.
Read more on the Whale Watching & Wildlife page.
- Can you recommend a place to stay in Whittier for the night
before or after the trip?
- We usually recommend June's
Whittier B & B, (888) 472-2396, located in Begich Towers. Other options
are the Anchor Inn, (877) 870-8787, in its own building, and Soundview
Getaway B & B, (800) 515-2358, located in the Sportsman Inn building.
Kayak shuttle questions
We're planning a kayak trip in the Sound. Where do you recommend we go?
- It depends on how much time you have, your budget for a shuttle,
your experience kayaking, and any initial ideas or preferences of your
own. If your budget is very small and you're dead set on getting a trip-share discount, that can be a factor as well
(you might decide to go to a certain spot because you can trip share
with another party being picked up from there, for example). Gather
this information (the more the better) and, if you're going to be
renting a kayak locally, it'd be better to have
Prince William Sound Kayak Center or
Alaska Sea Kayakers
help you plan out your trip. If you're renting from elsewhere or have your own, give us a call.
- Can we get a discount if another party is going our way?
- Maybe--we set up our trip-sharing page just for that purpose. We
offer discounts of up to 33% on some shared trips.
- Where can we rent a kayak in Whittier?
- For kayaking trips, we recommend and often network with Prince William Sound Kayak Center (907-472-2452 or
toll free 877-472-2452).
We also work with Alaska Sea Kayakers
(907-472-2534 or toll free 877-472-2534). For other kayaking-related questions, contact the
friendly folks at these outfitters.
