This photo and the following five were taken June 24, 2000 of a pod of 10-12 "resident," fish-eating orcas traveling north along the east side of Culross Island. Orcas have been more abundant in the northwestern part of Prince William Sound this year than they have been for the past several years. This may be related to a resurgence of the run of red salmon into the Coghill River, which had been depressed, but has been strong enough this year to again support a vigorous commercial fishery.
