About Capt. Gerry
Gerry Sanger has explored Prince William Sound for 30 years, including 21 years operating Sound Eco Adventures. He holds a U. S. Coast Guard 100-Ton Master's License. His career in marine biology included tours with the Smithsonian Institution, the National Marine Fisheries Service, and the National Marine Mammal Lab, where he supervised or participated in projects on plankton, oceanography, Northern Fur Seals and seabirds. His field work took him throughout the eastern North Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea. His formal education includes a B.Sc. in Fisheries Biology from Humboldt State University and several courses in oceanography and biology while employed as a Biological Oceanographer at the University of Washington. In 19 years with the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Alaska, Gerry specialized in ecological studies of seabirds, and most recently with seabird population surveys in Prince William Sound after the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. He has served on the Public Advisory Committee of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council, and on the boards of Prince William Soundkeeper and Gulf of Alaska Keeper. Gerry enjoys staying current with the status of the Alaska marine environment by attending the annual Alaska Marine Science Symposium and by reviewing research proposals for the North Pacific Research Board. Being an avid nature photographer, Gerry volunteers for the North Gulf Oceanic Society and Eye of the Whale Research by taking "photo I.D." images of whales during SEA tours to help track their movements in Prince William Sound.
